CLINICAL DEATH

Breathing and heartbeat have stopped. A person might still be able to live with CPR or other means, depending on why the vital signs ceased and under what conditions.

BRAIN DEATH

The lower brain or brain stem, which controls automatic body functions, stops working. A person can be kept alive only with the help of life support machines. The length of the system that the brain stem must be inactive before a person is declared legally depends from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

DEATH OF THE HIGHER BRAIN

The brain stem still functions, keeping the heart, lungs and digestive system working. But the sensing and thinking part of the brain dies.

WHOLE BRAIN DEATH

Both lower and higher brain have ceased.
